Soon after completing his Surgical Oncology training at A.I.I.M.S., he underwent rigorous training in the field of minimal access cancer surgery, not only within the country but abroad as well. He received Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery training from Korea and Laparoscopic Cancer Surgery training for stomach and esophageal cancers from Japan.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Cancer Surgery

Laparoscopic cancer surgery, also known as minimal access cancer surgery, offers several advantages:

• Less pain compared to open surgery due to very small incisions

How Is Laparoscopic Cancer Surgery Performed?

Laparoscopic cancer surgery is a technically challenging procedure, and not every surgeon is trained to perform it well.

During the surgery:

• 3 to 4 small cuts, approximately 4 to 5 mm in size, are made on the patient’s abdomen.
• A high-magnification camera is inserted through one of the incisions.
• Through the remaining small incisions, the surgeon and assistant surgeon perform the operation using specialised instruments.
• The magnified view provides much greater precision than the naked eye.
• Once the surgery is completed, the tumour is removed through a small incision.

This approach ensures:

• Less blood loss
• Early recovery

What Does Dr. Archit Pandit Say About Laparoscopic Cancer Surgery?

Dr. Archit Pandit feels that many patients still believe that, compared to open surgery, laparoscopic cancer surgery is not as effective or not as radical in removing cancer from the body.

However, he refutes this claim, as it has been proven beyond doubt that for certain cancers such as:

• Uterine cancers
• Esophageal cancers
• Stomach cancers
• Pancreatic cancers
• Colon cancers
• Rectal cancers

Laparoscopic cancer surgery offers better outcomes than open surgery in terms of:

• Early recovery

• Better overall outcomes

He believes that it is not the method of surgery that matters most, but ensuring that the patient is cancer-free at the end of the surgery.

At the same time, he feels that as technology continues to advance and as mobile phones become smarter and smaller—there is no reason why surgical scars and the discomfort associated with open cancer surgery cannot be minimised through laparoscopic or minimal access cancer surgery.
